If you’ve ever purchased a firearm online or plan to do so, you’ve probably come across the term “FFL” (Federal Firearms License). An FFL holder is a business or individual licensed by the Bureau
of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) to conduct firearm sales and transfers. Here at Jonestown Outfitters, we’re proud to be your local, home-based FFL in Texas. We
charge a $30 transfer fee and operate by appointment only to ensure one-on-one service. Below, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know to transfer a
firearm with us—whether you’re buying online or from a private individual.
Why Do You Need an FFL?
Federal law requires that all interstate firearm purchases (like those made online or from out-of-state dealers) be shipped to a licensed FFL. This ensures the proper background checks and
paperwork are completed according to ATF regulations. Purchasing from a private individual in the same state sometimes requires an FFL transfer depending on state and federal laws. In Texas, private
sales between Texas residents typically don’t require an FFL, but to stay on the right side of the law—and especially for online or interstate sales—an FFL transfer is often
mandatory.
Steps to Transfer a Firearm Through Jonestown Outfitters
-
Make Your Purchase
- Decide on the firearm you want and complete the purchase through your chosen online retailer or out-of-state seller.
- At checkout, provide Jonestown Outfitters as your receiving FFL. If the online retailer needs our license information, simply contact us and we’ll provide it.
-
Notify Us of Your Order
- After placing your order, please let us know you’re expecting a firearm shipment. You can reach us by phone, email, or via our online form.
- Providing your contact details and purchase information helps us keep track of incoming shipments and contact you promptly once your firearm arrives.
-
Wait for Arrival & Appointment Scheduling
- When your firearm arrives at Jonestown Outfitters, we will contact you to confirm its delivery.
- We will then work with you to schedule an appointment that fits your schedule. Please note that we are home-based and operate by
appointment only to provide personalized service and ensure your transfer goes smoothly.
-
Gather Required Documentation
- A valid, government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, state ID, or passport).
- If you hold a Texas License to Carry (LTC), bring it along. This will expedite the process and exempt you from the background check requirement.
- Proof of address if needed (e.g., a utility bill), especially if the address on your driver’s license is not current.
-
Complete the ATF Paperwork (Form 4473)
- All firearm transfers require the completion of ATF Form 4473. You’ll fill this out in person during your appointment.
-
Conducting the Background Check
- If you do not have a Texas LTC, we will perform a NICS background check as required by law. This typically takes only a few minutes, although delays can
occur.
- If you do have a Texas LTC, no background check is required, as your LTC fulfills that requirement for a transfer in Texas.
-
Pay the $30 Transfer Fee
- Our flat $30 transfer fee covers the administrative costs associated with legally transferring your firearm.
-
Take Possession of Your Firearm
- Once all paperwork is approved and the transfer is complete, we’ll hand over your firearm. You can head home confident that everything was done by the book.
Documentation & ATF Requirements
At Jonestown Outfitters, we strictly adhere to all ATF regulations to keep our customers and community safe. Here are a few key points to remember:
- Form 4473: You must accurately fill out every section of this form. Providing false information is illegal and could result in serious penalties.
- Valid Identification: The address on your ID should match your current residence. If it doesn’t, please bring additional documentation (like a recent utility bill).
- Prohibited Persons: Certain individuals are prohibited from purchasing or possessing firearms. We conduct the necessary checks to ensure compliance with federal and state
laws.
Texas License to Carry (LTC) Exemption
One of the best perks of having a Texas License to Carry is that it streamlines the firearm transfer process. Under Texas law, a valid LTC allows you to skip the NICS
background check step, making the transfer quicker and more convenient. If you don’t have an LTC, no worries—our team will conduct the background check on-site to complete your transfer.
